CHAPTER THIRTEEN

“Hello.”

Delia jumped. She looked up from altering a couple of things in her notes to see Samson. “Hello.”

“Did I scare you?” He slid into the chair where Joe had been sitting.

“A little. I thought I was alone in the house. I forgot you were staying here.”

“Ah, you forgot me? That must be my problem, all the pretty girls forget me.”

She put her hand over her mouth and giggled. “I'm sorry, it's just that I've been so busy writing this Christmas play that I've just blocked everything else out.” She looked back at him and saw him as though for the first time. His hazel eyes perfectly complimented his light brown hair.

Then her attention was taken by the bishop’s very pregnant cat who’d made herself comfortable in front of the fire. She hadn’t noticed her there before because her mind had been fully occupied with something else.

“Tell me what you're doing, what story is the Christmas play? What spin are you putting on it?”

“Well, I think everybody is a little bit shocked that I'm not doing the usual Christmas story. Now I'm second-guessing myself. It's what everybody expects. What if everybody is horribly disappointed?”

“I think what you're doing is wonderful.”

“You do?”

“I do.”

She smiled. She wanted a man who always agreed with her. That was number one on her list. Things were looking pretty good right now from where she sat. “I could always take a vote with everybody who's coming here tonight.”

“Who’s coming here tonight?”

“People who will be in the play. They’re coming after dinner.”

“You were here earlier cooking.”

“That's right. We're having a roast tonight. You don't have anywhere else to be, do you?”

“Not when there's a roast on the menu.”

She smiled. She was going to enjoy seeing more of him.

“I remember you and your cousin from when I used to visit Joe years back.”

She gasped. “I remember you too.”

“I've got a pretty good memory for faces.”

“What brings you to Stinterton, Samson?”

“I’m helping my cousin out. I was surprised my uncle didn’t ask me, but I came to help out anyway.”

“That’s good of you. Are you and Joe close?”

She knew by seeing Joe’s reaction yesterday that they didn’t get along. It didn’t make sense he’d come to help Joe. Perhaps it was a case of God intervening on her behalf if he was the man for her.

“As close as cousins can be who only see each other once a year or so.”

She opened her book to the back and looked down at her list. Number 2 on the list was that her future husband should be kind. She closed the book and looked up at him. “It was very kind of you to help Joe by coming all the way here. Do you consider yourself a kind person?”

He smiled and his eyes crinkled at the corners. “I couldn’t say that about myself or that would be prideful, but others have said that about me. That’s all I can say.”

That was good enough for her.

“Do you want some help with the play? Why don’t you tell me what you’ve got so far? Use me as your sounding board.
